Car Titles

If you are a first-time car buyer, you may be unfamiliar with several terms associated with purchasing a car. One such term is the car title, which is a very important document that confirms ownership of a vehicle. Every automobile, used or new, has a title.

If you are trading your old car, you will usually need to bring the title with you to the dealership. If you or someone you know is in the market for a great used car at a reasonable price, contact one of the 11 Austin used car dealers of Chapman Motor Sales, or browse our combined online inventory today.

What is a Car Title?

Titles apply to all property, not just automobiles. In general, a title is a document that is used to show that a particular individual owns a particular piece of property. In the realm of automobiles, the owner of the vehicle holds possession of the car’s title.

Individuals who finance their automobiles do not carry the titles to their cars; rather, the lending institution is considered the owner until the individual pays the full amount of the car loan back.

When an individual buys a used car, he or she has to work with the previous owner, like a car dealership, to get the title transferred.
