Engine Types

When shopping for a used car, many individuals consider make, model, year, and luxury features. Some buyers completely neglect to consider the type of engine that a car has. The type of engine on a car is a good indicator of the cost of ownership an individual can expect to have.

Engine types are also important in determining how an automobile will drive. If you or someone you know is in the market for a great used car at a reasonable price, contact one of the 11 Austin used car dealers of Chapman Motor Sales, or browse our combined online inventory today.

Understanding Engines

Engines are classified by two different things: the number of cylinders that the engine has, and the type of fuel it runs on. The number of cylinders usually determines how powerful the engine is; more cylinders means more power.

The most common engine variations are:

  • Inline 4
  • V6
  • V8

The letter or word indicates the way the cylinders are organized, and the number indicates how many cylinders the engine has. Any of these configurations for consumer automobiles will likely come in gasoline or diesel, though some gasoline engines may also run on E85 fuel.

More powerful engines will usually use more fuel, so individuals should consider how much they can reasonably spend on fuel each month before committing to a certain vehicle.
