Study shows best time to buy used cars are during holiday season

According to the automotive website, Cargurus.com, the best time to buy a used car may in fact be December during holiday season.

The websites analysis is based off of the used car index and shows that the demand for car decreases at year end, and therefore the lowest average used car prices are roughly during the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas.  Prices will quickly increase at the new year as demand increases.

The site expects used car prices to hit their low on Jan 4.  They will rise up as much as 4 percent by the middle of February.

The Automotive Leasing Group has named the Subaru, the Best Mainstream Brand of 2011. This is the second year in a row that the car has been awarded this title from ALG.

The award was given as one of the Residual Value Awards that ALG has given out every year for the past 12 years. The awards are used as a benchmark for the industry to know a vehicle’s quality and trade-in values in the future. Three of Subaru’s six vehicles won in their categories including the Subaru Forester for Best Utility Compact.

Sales of used trucks slow in July

The sales of used trucks have slowed from June to July, but are still on a positive gain for the entire year. On a year-to-year basis, 2010 is 43 percent increase over the sales in 2009.

The price of a used truck has moved slightly higher in 2010 and the average age of the truck has also slightly raised. The ACT Used Truck database, which collects data for the commercial vehicle industry, shows that there have been about 2,500 purchases per month.

The vice-president of ACT said that the used truck sales would probably not increase until the sales of new trucks increase bringing in more equipment.

Recently, more and more dealers are making it known that they will pay cash for your car or accept a trade in. Many dealers in Michigan are equipped with signs that say “We Buy Cars” and that they will buy it even if you are not purchasing a car from them.

Some say that there is a shortage of used cars and that this means that you may be able to get more for a trade in. Michigan also ran a Cash-for-Clunkers program that took 700,000 used cars out of circulation in the area.
