Chapman Motor Sales heard yesterday that a larger, streamlined recycling program will be implemented in the downtown area of Austin. This new program will offer 100 new recycling containers that will allow downtown businesses to mix different recyclable materials in the same container. Previously, only glass and paper products were supported by the recycling bins downtown, and they had to be separated as well.

This switch was announced on Monday by the City of Austin, and was designed to enhance the recycling contributions of downtown restaurants and businesses. These businesses will no longer have to sort their recyclable products before distributing them into the city containers.

The United States Census Bureau recently released data regarding expanding areas across the country. The data showed that the Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos area was the second fastest growing area in the United States between April 2010 and July 2011.

During that time, the population in Austin climbed to 1.8 million people, an increase of 67,000 people. The 3.9 percent rise in population came in second only to Washington, where a 4.3 increase was measured during the same time frame.

“In some remote cases, the battery cable cover inside the boot [trunk] of these vehicles may be incorrectly mounted,” BMW said. “This can result in the electrical system malfunctioning, the vehicle failing to start and, in some cases, to charring or fire.”

The recall affects models of the 5 and or 6-series cars made between 2003 and 2010. Car owners received letters about the issue and were told to bring the cars in to get an inspection.

The Midwinter Southwest Cycling Summit is the first of its kind and is put together by the National Brotherhood of Cyclists and a new Austin cycling group, Major Taylor Austin.  The National Brotherhood of Cyclists is an organization of African American cycling clubs and Major Taylor Austin’s mission is to “inspire a love of cycling in minority communities as a healthy alternative mode of transportation, a competitive sport, a way of staying fit and a way to build community through subculture.”
